A Little About our Guest of Honor - Richard III

For many, Richard III is known only from the Shakespeare play of the same name.  This is not a very flattering portrait of the King, perhaps because Shakespeare had sympathies for the Tudors who took the crown in the War of the Roses.  Sharon Kay Penman's book 'The Sunne in Splendour' is a much more accurate account of Richard's life and ultimate death on the fields of Bosworth.

Richard's remains were recently found under a parking lot which makes this trip most timely.  While Shakespeare's Richard was deformed, Richard was considered a formidable battle commander helping his brother regain his crown at Barnett and Tewkesbury while still in his teens.

In order to help restore his reputation, the Richard III society was established in 1924.  Considering Richard was only King for two years and died while a youthful 32, he obviously stoked a lot of emotions both good and bad.

Hopefully I can share some of the knowledge I gain on the trip with you so you can make your own judgement on this, the last Plantagenet King that marked the end of the Middle Ages.
